Part II: Comparative Literature and Other Forms of Torture

Emma hadn’t been able to sleep since she accidentally summoned the wrong demon four days ago. Which is the bare minimum one might expect after summoning an entity by mistake — especially when he decides to sit in your favorite armchair, wear your comfy slippers and your post-shower robe, and grab the remote like he’d rented the place on Airbnb.

"There’s no Netflix in Hell, you know?" Vessel commented, flipping through reality shows and horror movies with the same enthusiasm someone might show for the weather forecast. "We’ve got something similar, but it’s more... eternal. And involves more screaming."

"Are you really staying there?"

"Are you really pretending this is comfortable?" He slapped the armrest. "This is foam with a dead grandma print."

Emma huffed.

"Okay. Rules. First: no sarcasm before 9 AM."

"Ha ha."

"Second: no possessing electronic devices. My laptop already crashes on its own."

"I promise to only possess things in extreme cases. Like commercials with annoying jingles."

He turned to her, smirking.

"You know, if you wanted a pact, you could’ve asked for something more useful. Money, power, I don’t know... flirting skills."

"I do have flirting skills."

"Sure. That’s why you’ve been single for… how long again?"

She crossed her arms.

"That’s invasive."

"I’m a demon. Invasiveness is my strong suit. I sabotage, disturb, and occasionally give unsolicited advice. Teasing is for cupids and ghost coaches."

She ran her hands over her face.

"This is punishment."

"Technically, it’s a cosmic consequence of your failure to properly read occult texts. Punishment is what happens if I have to sleep on the couch."

He got up from the armchair and began inspecting the room like a picky landlord. He stopped in front of the bookshelf, tilted his head, and let out a judgmental "hmm."

"‘Contemporary romance with a touch of drama and questionable endings’..." He read the titles aloud. "You’ve got good taste. Predictable, but good."

"Don’t touch my books."

"I’m just analyzing. Promise. Still processing the fact that I was summoned by an Ali Hazelwood fan. Explains a lot."

"Like what?"

"That you should be careful what you wish for, human. Sometimes the enemy shows up... but the romance ends up in debt."

Emma narrowed her eyes but didn’t respond. It was hard to argue when the guy you wanted to kick out of your room was wearing your lilac bathrobe and philosophizing about contemporary fiction like a bored literary critic.

"Look," she started, raising a finger, "if you came here to destroy my self-esteem and my literary taste all at once, congrats. Mission accomplished."

Vessel gave her a lazy smile and pulled a book off the shelf, flipping through it like it was some strange artifact.

"And if you wanted the right demon, maybe you should’ve double-checked your pronunciation and, I don’t know, used... what’s it called, Gorgul?"

"Google. It’s called Google."

"Yeah, that. You didn’t do that and now you’re stuck with me — a dramatic catalyst for your life’s plot. You know, every protagonist needs one."

"I’m not a protagonist. I’m a senior lit student trying to finish her final project without completely losing her mind. And you", she pointed at him like she was facing off with a flying cockroach, "are what happens when sleep deprivation meets sketchy grimoires from the internet."

"Exactly," he replied, proudly. "I’m the plot twist you didn’t ask for, but now have to deal with."

She rolled her eyes and collapsed onto the sofa, sinking into the cushions like they could shield her from the supernatural avalanche in the shape of a man currently invading her life. He returned to the armchair, now chewing on a bookmark like it was a toothpick.

"What’s your full name again?" she asked, too tired to keep denying reality.

"Oh. Now you ask… Gonna try to gain power over me by learning my name? Hate to burst your bubble, but that’s just superstition. Doesn’t work."

He dropped the bookmark and leaned forward, elbows on his knees, as if about to share a precious secret.

"My name is Vessel. Just Vessel. The rest is unpronounceable in human tongues and causes spontaneous combustion in recycled paper."

"Great. So, Mister Vessel, what exactly do I need to do to dissolve this arcane bond or whatever it is?"

He shrugged.

"Like I said, something grand. A deep personal achievement. Could be an act of true love, an emotional epiphany, or... turning in that assignment with your soul in it."

Emma raised a brow.

"You’re telling me if I write a good short story and get a high grade, you’ll disappear?"

"Maybe. Or maybe you’ll realize you like having me around and decide to keep me for a few centuries. Imagine that? The first human to keep a demon as a literary consultant. You’d blow up on Shick-Shack"

"It’s TikTok. And I’d rather have a cat named Cersei."

"And I’d rather be haunting a corrupt banker right now, but life’s full of surprises."

A brief silence settled between them, broken only by the low drone of the TV, where reality show contestants were yelling for absurd reasons.

"Fine," she said at last. "Let’s make a temporary deal. You stay out of my dreams, my drawers, and my personal drama. In exchange, you can... comment on my drafts. But only if you promise to stop wearing my robe."

Vessel looked down at the purple fabric wrapped around him with a thoughtful expression.

"Tricky. It’s absurdly comfortable."

"I’m not negotiating, I’m threatening."

He raised his hands in surrender.

"Very well, human. We have a provisional truce. But fair warning: I’m excellent at subtext and terrible at boundaries."

Emma sighed.

"Why me?"

"Because you said the wrong words, in the wrong tone, at the wrong time. And deep down, you wanted an impossible story. Congrats. Now you’re living one."

He smiled sideways.

And for a second — just one — Emma had the distinct feeling her life had officially gone off the rails.

Emma thought that, after accidentally summoning a demon, nothing else could surprise her. She thought. Because on the fifth day of forced cohabitation, she found herself trying to attend her Comparative Literature class while an infernal being made sarcastic remarks in her ear like some kind of hellish commentator, audio-description version for those who never asked for it.

"Seriously, you're debating the narrator's function for the third time this week?" Vessel yawned, floating beside her chair. "Have you considered summoning the narrator's spirit and asking directly? Much more efficient."

Emma gripped her pen so tightly it almost turned into a weapon.

"Shut up."

The girl sitting next to her, with a thick braid and a curious look, turned slowly, frowning.

"What?"

"Nothing!" Emma forced a smile. A stiff, tense smile. "Just… talking to myself, no big deal"

The girl nodded with an awkward little smile and went back to her notes. Vessel chuckled.

"Nice save, Emma. Totally natural."

"Why are you here?" she whispered through clenched teeth. "You don't have to follow me to college."

"Of course I do. Arcane bond, remember? Until it dissipates, I go where you go. Including your Literary Analysis classes that smell like boredom and mildew. Oh, and there's something dripping from that ceiling fan. Just saying."

Emma looked up. Yep. It wasn’t demon sweat, unfortunately.

He rose and hovered a bit higher, observing the classmates, the whiteboards, the motivational posters taped to the walls. It was the first time he seemed genuinely curious.

"Humans put motivational quotes on walls when they lack internal motivation, is that it?"

"Shhh!"

Vessel let out a sigh, and she imagined he rolled his eyes too, before beginning to recite the posters in a dramatic tone as she tried to copy the projected slides:

"You are capable of everything you haven’t tried yet.' How poetic. And vague. Have you tried flying, Emma?"

"I will curse you if you don’t shut up," she hissed.

"Too late, sweetheart. That’s my job."

During the break, she tried to seek refuge in the library. A sacred place. Quiet. Cozy. At least until Vessel discovered the computers.

"Wow. This place is a relic. Smells like ancient dust and burnt cookies." He turned on a terminal with a snap of his fingers. "The system froze before it even opened the browser. Impressive."

"Please don’t touch anything."

"Too late. I found YouTube. Look at this! A channel called ‘Apocalypse Cooking’. There’s a video on how to make doomsday garlic bread with just three ingredients."

"You’re going to crash the system, and the librarian’s going to kick me out again."

"Relax, she can’t even see me. In fact, she’s looking at you right now like ‘this girl’s been talking to herself for way too long’."

Emma gave the librarian a fake smile and waved. The woman blinked slowly, like someone who had long since given up trying to understand young people.

When she finally sat down to write her story for the Creative Writing class, on her own laptop and not the library fossils, Vessel sprawled — invisible — on the floor between the bookshelves and started narrating his own demonic contract with the tone of a French cult film trailer.

"‘Partial invocation. Potential emotional bond. Guaranteed chaos for an indefinite time. Not recommended for minors or emotionally unstable adults.’ Dramatic enough?"

"Vessel..."

"‘Any exorcism attempt will result in public embarrassment, nausea, and academic failure.’"

She looked up, pushed her laptop aside, and stared at him.

"This is a nightmare."

"No, this is college. Hell is less bureaucratic."

He stood, circled her chair, and pointed at her laptop screen.

"Okay, but seriously. This dialogue in your story? How do humans say it? ‘Meh.’ Needs more chaos. Emotion. Subtlety. Want help?"

Emma raised an eyebrow.

"You were serious when you said you could help me write the story?"

"I’ve inspired tragedies since Ancient Greece. I was the muse of three cursed playwrights. One has a festival named after him. Another choked on parchment. The third... fell in love with a tree. Long story."

She sighed.

"Well, I did try the ritual for this exact reason... but if you make me get a bad grade..." She left the threat hanging, staring at him in what was meant to be intimidating. It’s hard to scare a demon who’s been alive for millennia.

"I have millennia of tragedy under my belt, darling. I’m basically a walking infernal genius. And better than most people charging fifty bucks an hour."

Emma shut the laptop with a snap and looked around. The library remained silent, the other students oblivious to the supernatural being sprawled in front of her.

"Okay, but we’re not doing this here. I’m not about to become known as the crazy girl who talks to herself in the library. Let’s go home."

She looked at the empty space — or rather, at Vessel — and muttered with the expression of someone who had already given up fighting fate:

"What the hell have I gotten myself into?"

Vessel grinned, already wrapped in an aura of false innocence.

"The best version of your existence. Now let’s go home and write your story. I want metaphorical blood and emotional climax. And preferably no happy endings. There’s already too much romance on those shelves."

Technophobia - fear of technology

Many individuals fear technological devices in modern society.

For example, some individuals look with fear upon computers, highly technical telephone answering systems, and even videocassette recorders.

Some individuals become very anxious when faced with a set of instructions that are supposed to be easy for the average individual to follow.

Another aspect of technophobia is the fear that machines will be able to do what people do now.

Fear of robots is part of this fear.

Mechanophobia - fear of machinery; somewhat related to fears of technical things, such as computers.

Prosophobia - fear of progress; may be related to fears of novelty, newness, and innovation, and to technophobia and computer phobia.

Cyberphobia - fear of computers, computerization, or things related to computers; involves fear, distrust, or hatred of computers.

However, some experts, such as Mark Kenwright and Isaac Marks, M.D., have used computers to help individuals become desensitized from the things they fear, as discussed in the British Journal of Psychiatry in 2004.

In this study, experts used computer-aided help over the Internet with 10 patients with phobia and panic. (The study is small and larger studies should be performed in the future.)

The patients improved significantly at a one-month follow-up, and their gains were clinically significant. Kenwright and his colleagues said the Internet users were generally satisfied, although 3 of them said they would have preferred face-to-face help.

Said Kenwright et al., “Computer-aided self-exposure guidance using the internet [sic] at home, with brief advice from a clinician on a live helpline, may help some people with phobia or panic disorders to overcome barriers to treatment such as the scarcity of qualified therapists and having to travel to see the therapist in person.”

Obviously those who are computer-phobic could not use the Internet to deal with their phobias. Some individuals who are faced with the need to learn to use computers or to learn new programs on their computers will show symptoms of classic phobia, such as:

nausea,

dizziness,

cold sweat, and

high blood pressure.

Many computer phobics hide their fears because of heavy work and peer pressure to make efficient use of computers.

Individuals who fear computers can overcome their phobia by gradually exposing themselves to electronic calculators, games, and eventually to simple computer programs.

Coaching and feedback (from an expert) are good ways to improve the learning curve for mastering electronic devices.

Technophobia Trope

Characters or groups who are afraid of technology and the evils that can arise from their use.

Covers technology in general as the primary motivator.

Sometimes this arises from an event that happened in a person or nation's past, but often is just a result of fear of the unknown.

Sometimes, these individuals or groups are concerned for the future if these advances go unchecked.

This trope can also be brought on as a result of religious teachings or as a result of a dichotomy such as Magic vs Technology (e.g., The Darksword Trilogy) or Nature vs Technology (e.g., FernGully: The Last Rainforest or Avatar).

Evil Luddite is an extreme example of this trope. This is a lot milder and often applies to some of the protagonists to create tension. Can be related to New Technology Is Evil and Science Is Bad tropes.

Aversion of a specific type of technology (such as Doesn't Like Guns) might be Sub-Tropes. Technologically Blind Elders is a subtrope.

Examples:

The Twilight Zone (1959): In "A Thing About Machines", Bartlett Finchley despises all machines, even more than he hates people, and destroys his appliances if he can't get them to work. For instance, he kicked in the screen of his television and threw his radio down the stairs.

The Twilight Zone (1985): In "Quarantine", the survivors of World War III in 2043 came to distrust and despise technology because nuclear weapons had wiped out 80% of the world's population. They abandoned machines in favor of improving humanity through genetic engineering and achieving harmony with the natural world.

In the Anita Blake series, it's mentioned by Anita that really old vampires can be technophobes. They just aren't used to it and don't trust or understand new technology.

As a trans guy I'm really worried about maintaining access to T. I live in a safe state but I know how quickly things can change in a matter of months to years, so.. I'm worried. That being said, what do you know of DIY HRT? I know that cis guys sometimes use T and I doubt they always go through their doctor, so I'm curious how that works.

I don't want to have to do this, but I figured I should at least know the gist of it should I ever need to or if someone I know is in the same situation.

As a fellow trans guy, I feel you. Note that while the following looks like advice, it is for educational purposes only, and you are using this information at your own risk.

The following is listed from least to most illegal:

Probably your absolute best bet (especially if you pass) is to get a doctor that can prescribe T for male hypogonadism (low T). Now, this is probably not going to be an in-person doctor for two reasons. One is that they will probably do a testicular exam, which will give things away. Second, most electronic medical records link up these days, so any doctor treating you will be able to pull your medical records and find out you're trans.

One possible way around this is telehealth, which has boomed since the pandemic. Try googling "male hypogonadism telehealth" to check around for options. This will probably need to be paid out of pocket under a fake name if you want to ensure your account isn't linked. Make sure you know the symptoms of male hypogonadism, or come up with a story about how you're already diagnosed because you had mumps as a kid or something. Note that if they ask for a blood test, which they probably will, and you're not already out of T, skip your dose and take the test a few days later, so you test low. The nice thing about this is it gets you a diagnosis that can only be gotten if you're AMAB, so it lends credibility to your situation.

The next option is to stockpile some T while you still have access to it. Because T is controlled, the most T you can have in your possession is a 6-month prescription (otherwise you risk a 4th degree felony). However, if the prescription is written for 1-ml vials and your dose is 0.5ml/week and the prescription says to "discard vial after 1 dose" you can technically have up to a year (because in theory, you're throwing away 0.5ml of T each time you inject- but you could also, in theory, keep it and use it as long as you were careful to clean the top with alcohol before you puncture it). Keep in mind that even if you happen to get more T than a year's worth, it's only good for about 3 years before it starts losing potency or may become contaminated.

The (far) next option is to find someone in the bodybuilding community and start asking around. Making it clear that you know how to do injections will get you to people who have T that they don't want to self-inject but may trade you (or at least sell to you) for doing their injections. This is your best bet for finding illegal T. Note that T is a (pretty dang) controlled substance. You and everyone involved in getting T to you is at significant legal risk (that 4th degree felony again).

Unfortunately even looking in the dark recesses of reddit I was not able to find a safe "recipe" for testosterone. Most of what is suggested is to buy T powder from overseas and compound it yourself into a cream. This is very very illegal and could be very dangerous if you don't do it correctly. I'm not going to talk about it here because I don't understand it enough. Also it's really freaking illegal.

Note: If you haven't yet had a hysterectomy, I suggest you do everything in your power to keep a functioning ovary. That way if you do lose access to T, you won't lose bone density. If you have already gotten your ovaries removed, talk to a doctor about low-dose hormones to maintain bone density.

Misa Explains 1: Spintronics in a nutshell

A series of posts where I will explain bits and pieces of physics I have gathered throughout the my foray into this wonderful science. Warning, these will be long.

Wait what even is going on?

Okay, first of all, why are we even talking about spintronics, whatever that means? Now, we live in an age where we need devices, right? Phones, TVs, laptops, name it. All digital devices come under electronics, which is a cluster of what we call "logic devices" (verrry loosely speaking) with various functions, made with expert circuitry to create our sophisticated "smart" devices. Whew. That's a lot of words. But what does it mean? It means that the very device you're using to view this post is made up of very tiny mini devices, which are made to utilize electrical signals (current, flow of electrons) to make it store information, read information, or perform logic tasks ("AND", "OR" "NOT" and the rest. Let me know if you want me to explain those, but this is not the point of the post so I'm letting them hang in the air for now).

We store digital information in the form of 'bits' (I swear all of this is relevant, please be patient) which is a computer's language of storing and using information. If you've watched any show involving hacking, you'll see stacks after stacks of "1"s and "0"s on their high contrast screens in that radioactive green font (general older sister advice: don't use high contrast it hurts your eyes), these are bits and the basis on which logic devices work. Each combination of 1s and 0s makes a different information, which is the backbone of computing. Now, how these devices make 1s and 0s is again a whole course on electronics, so I will skip over it to just preface that they exist and that's how we make digital devices.

All these years, we have used semiconductors, which allow moderate amount of current flow from them (in contrast to conductors, which allow free flow of electrons, and insulators, which do not allow flow of electrons) to make transistors, which are currently the building blocks of circuit-making devices.

[here's a picture containing ICs (the bug-like looking thing covered in wires) which have tiny transistors inside them, and the LEDs, on which the lit ones are "1"s and unlit ones are "0"s. This was my project for one of my courses!]

In electronics, a very famous law called Moore's Law, states that for increase in tech and development, the amount of transistors in integrated circuits (IC) doubles every two years. This moves proportionally with the increase in use of semiconductors, because transistors are made using them.

Every device maker's main goal is to make a device faster, smoother, and more functional. Which means, more transistors, better semiconductors. Moreover, the smaller space occupied by the ICs, the better. But obviously there's a limit to how much we can decrease the size of the transistors. One is the technical issue of creating such a small object, which will require highly precise instruments which we are not in possession of/ not feasible in the long run. The second issue is the working. "Will a semiconductor keep it's properties when they layer is so small?" is a valid question to ask when we go further down in scale. In simple words: in the long run, improving semiconductors for transistors will be difficult. Moore's law plateaus, and the number of transistors doesn't double with two years. What now? We can't just stop developing better computing devices, not just smart devices, astronomy, medicine and other scientific areas also require reliable, stable and fast computing devices.

Which means we desperately need new materials (and techniques) for logic and memory devices.

Hold on, when's spintronics going to start?

Okay background information done. Now we move onto spins and why we use it. We know that atoms are made of protons, electrons and neutrons. Out of these, electrons "revolve" in "orbits" around the nucleus, which holds the protons and neutrons. I put "revolve" and "orbits" in quotes because essentially it's a cloud of probabilities and we have no clue what path it truly takes. Electrons reside in what are called 'orbitals', which are balloon-like spaces which have a high probability of the electrons being present in (@/chemblrish explains orbitals better here).

Now along with the "revolution", electrons also considered to have a "spin". We don't really know if it "spins" the way Bayblades do, but regardless, they have an angular momentum, which is classically something rotating objects possess (@/mimin-vs-physics goes more in depth on quantum mechanical fun stuff) Either way, we don't know why it has angular momentum, but we know it does (at least I have no idea if we've figured it out??). And in true human fashion, we see anything new and think "now how can I utilize this for my benefit?"

Years and years of research later, we figured out something interesting. The angular momentum which the electron spins contain, and the angular momentum of electrons in "orbits" can interact! This interaction is called Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) and it causes a bunch of other fascinating phenomena in quantum mechanics. One of which, is that it if we supply electricity into a metal plane, we can align the electrons and their spins in such a way that it causes a stream of current (remember: current is essentially a flow of electrons in one direction) with aligned spins to move into a different layer perpendicularly.

Okay but what does all of this have to do anything with Spintronics?

We're finally at the part where we can discuss what Spintronics is! We can use our now generated spin current to make electronic devices (hence, spintronics!). So, how do we make these tiny devices?

What we first take is a heavy metal (these are metallic elements/alloys with high atomic numbers, which have a lot of free electrons to use) and make a very thin film of it. (The procedure of making thin films is very interesting, and I will make the next post on it!) We can now pass a stream of current/electricity* parallel to the surface of the thin film, which will give us a stream of spin-aligned electrons bouncing to move into an upper layer.

For the upper layer, we add a thin layer of a ferromagnet. A ferromagnet is a type of material which readily aligns its spin on one direction when under a magnetic field (contrary to this are paramagnets which weakly align their spins, and diamagnets which weakly align their spins opposite to the applied field).

Now remember the electrons with their spin aligned which wanted to move into the upper layer? Yeah once they are given an upper layer to move into, they flow into the layer, bringing their aligned spins with them. This spin can now affect the ferromagnet's spin, and align it in either the direction of the applied electric field ( the one applied on the heavy metal layer. I'm marking it as * for you to check which electric field I mean) or directly opposite to the direction of the electric field. This alignment can be measured. The value doesn't matter, only the direction. Is it parallel to the electric field or anti-parallel? "Up" or "down"? "Left" or "right"? Or, in terms of electronics, "1" or "0".

And look! We now have a way to make a tiny device which can display values of "1" or "0"! We used an analog signal (electricity) to create a digital output (1s and 0s)! That is electronics! But because it uses spins, it is called Spintronics.

Because we use Spin-Orbit Coupling, these devices are extremely precise and fast. And the layers of heavy metal/ferromagnet will be in the ranges of nanometers (10^-9 m), so they are also extremely small. We can also choose materials with properties we like (high melting/boiling point, low reactivity) to create devices which can work in extreme conditions (high heat, pressure, reactive areas).

And here we have it! We've made spintronic devices!

Shufflemancy 101: A Brief History & Analysis

Hey! If you like my work and want to support me in my quest for divination theory, digital tools, algorithmic quandries, and research into niche divination tools, consider throwing dollars at my Ko-Fi tip jar! Every contribution helps me keep making posts like this one. (You can also read this post over on Ko-Fi!)

The difficulty with researching something like shufflemancy is that it's a relatively modern phenomenon. I haven't yet found anyone (online or in a book) specifically talking about the origins of shufflemancy as a term or where it might've come from.

So, we start from square one.

What is Shufflemancy?

According to Wikipedia, shufflemancy is divination "by the use of an electronic media player such as an electronic playlist, iPod, or other medium wherein one skips a certain number of songs and the lyrics and/or tune of the song is the answer to the divinatory question."

Simple enough. Use an electronic collection of music that's been shuffled to divine.

This did lead me to the question: What counts as shufflemancy? Does tuning into a radio station count?

It's my opinion that radio divination does not count. There's no shuffle function. Yes, it has an element of chance, and that's what makes it divination. It certainly falls under the wider umbrella of divination via music, too. But it isn't shufflemancy if it doesn't make use of a shuffle function.

So, to make things simple, for something to be shufflemancy, it must:

Use an electronic medium

Involve a randomized shuffle function

Be something the shufflemancer can interpret to answer a question (pretty much anything)

Early Shufflemancy

The earliest form of shufflemancy as we understand it today, using the above requirements, would probably be tape players capable of shuffling music. With the nature of tape, it would take a while for the thing to wind and rewind to find the cue on the tape which signaled the start or end of a song, but it'd work.

With that said, shuffling as we understand and recognize it today would've started with CDs in the 1980s. There were CD players that could hold three to five disks at a time. They could shuffle songs between all disks held in the player, creating a random mix of tunes for listeners to enjoy.

Using either of these methods for divination would work, technically. The results would be somewhat limited, but that doesn't mean it's a bad method to use. Especially if your CD player could hold 5 disks, you could easily put in 5 albums from different artists with all different vibes for a wider variety of outputs.

I certainly remember using my little blue radio that held two CDs at once like this. I'd put in two albums and hit shuffle, and the first song that played would be my vibe and advice for the day. It was divination -- some of the earliest I'd ever done consciously, at the young age of nine. And when I got the bigger one that held three CDs? Game changer.

So this puts shufflemancy's origins somewhere around the mid-to-late 1980s, when Sony put out the first CD player with shuffle. As we moved into the 1990s, CDs became more popular and cassettes faced obsolescence.

The Shuffle Revolution & Early Modern Shufflemancy

In 2005, Apple changed the game again. It had already debuted the iPod in 2001, providing an easy, pocket-sized music experience as a direct challenge to the CD's cultural domination. On January 11, 2005, nearly 20 years ago, Apple announced the iPod Shuffle.

And oh, boy, did it change everything.

I could talk forever about the iPod's impact on the music industry, the death of the in-order album, and the eventual rise of music streaming services. But others have done that to death, so I'll focus in on our topic of shufflemancy.

This is where we start seeing shuffling music as it is now, in the modern day. In my digging, I found mentions of the term "shufflemancy" as early as 2007 -- just two years after the iPod Shuffle was announced. Someone proposed the concept and terminology of "shufflemancy" as we understand it today on a Halfbakery Forum "Idea" post on October 3, 2007.

It's difficult to say whether this is the first instance of the term. In reality, shufflemancy seems to have emerged as a natural by-product of the evolution of music technology. Where there is innovation, witches and diviners will mold it to their purposes. We're a resourceful bunch like that. It grew organically as we moved from buying albums to buying singles to streaming music without buying at all.

People were offering public shufflemancy readings as early as 2009 in places like TarotForum.net. It's spoken about during this era as a "silly" and "new" form of divination that people were trying out. There aren't any dates in that link, but according to the website's data, the first post in the thread was published on June 16, 2009.

From there, shufflemancy saw a gradual rise in popularity. It evolved from using iPods to iTunes, Napster, and eventually Spotify as these new applications emerged.

Shufflemancy Now

If you look up "shufflemancy" using Spotify's search function, you'll receive dozens of results. Many of the top playlists are public ones curated by shufflemancers for themselves and others to use. Options range from general playlists to "mega mixes" containing upwards of 200 hours of music from all different genres, artists, and eras. There are some with a paltry five hours of music, while one that I've seen goes up over the 600 hour mark. (If I can find that one again, I'll reblog it, because... damn.)

Select a "messages from your guides" option from the search or curate your own -- the choice is yours. For one-time shufflemancers, using a pre-made option may be the best, most economical choice. But dedicated shufflemancers sometimes boast multiple hundred-hour playlists for different purposes, all personally curated.

Clearly, it's popular. There are shufflemancers on Tumblr and Etsy offering free and paid services using their specially curated playlists. A quick search is all you need to find someone receiving a divinatory reading via song lyrics, meanings, and vibes. And it seems to work -- sellers on Etsy boast hundreds of positive reviews. Some even offer playlist curation services for personal shufflemancy or messages from deities and/or spirits.

It all begs the question, how does shufflemancy work?

Shufflemancy Methodology

Finding this is significantly easier than pinning down the history of shufflemancy. This post from Tumblr user orriculum, sums it up fairly well. So does this one by the-daily-diviner.

To do shufflemancy, the basic steps are:

Create or find a playlist of songs. A large collection seems to be the most favorable option for a wide spread of possibilities.

Ask a question. Divination 101 -- figure out what you want to know and ask it. Simple enough.

Pick a number. Choose any number and shuffle that many times or skip that many songs.

Listen to the song. Write down lyrics that stick out, messages that come through, and anything else that seems relevant (genre, tempo, vibe, etc.)

Interpret. Take the information gathered during the song and use it to draw conclusions, just like any other form of divination.

Simple enough. Shufflemancy is the sort of method that requires a high level of intuitive thinking. It's very mutable and suits a good amount of personalization.

This is both good and bad, I think. It would be incredibly easy to create a bias in your shufflemancy playlists by selecting songs with primarily one genre, artist, album, emotion, or through-line. The ideal playlist really does have a wide variety of music, and this means selecting songs that the shufflemancer doesn't necessarily like. We all have a genre or artist we hate; excluding an entire genre skews results. Impartial selections of music are critical to the success of good divination. Otherwise, we risk interfering with the outcome.

And speaking of interfering...

The Algorithm Problem

(Note: I'm focusing in on Spotify since it's very commonly used and because it's accessible to me. Shufflemancy can be (and is!) done with plenty of other apps like Apple Music.)

When Spotify was originally launched, it used a version of the Fisher-Yates Shuffle to perform its shuffling of music. In essence, this algorithm takes a finite sequence of data, picks an option from that selection of data, and removes it from the pool. Then, it picks another and another until no more options remain.

At first glance, this seems great! It creates a fairly random output. But as is the nature of randomness, there were clusters. The same artist would play four or five times in a row from a large playlist, and Spotify users complained. It was random, but it didn't feel that way.

The human brain is wired to find connections and patterns. When the same artist plays over and over again despite a playlist being on shuffle mode, it creates a pattern that the brain recognizes. Therefore, the "true" randomness of clustering outputs was unsatisfactory.

So, in 2014, Spotify updated it. Their new algorithm would detect and remember the song it just played and, in shuffling, account for the artist and album to provide a more random-feeling result. The new algorithm detects what's already played and selects accordingly to prevent the same artist from playing twice in a row, just as it prevents the same song from playing twice. It spreads artists out evenly (though not perfectly, to maintain the illusion of randomness) to provide an enhanced listening experience.

What does this mean for shufflemancy, then? If Spotify's algorithm is interfering in the output provided from a playlist, does that mean it's not a reliable form of divination?

At first, I wasn't so sure. I adjusted my thinking -- if a tarot app was preventing certain cards from being drawn (or from being drawn in a particular order) because I'd already drawn them that day or week, would that render the app unreliable? And the answer was yes. It would! It removes the random element from the method, therefore making it not true divination by my definition.

So shufflemancy with Spotify isn't (good) divination, then. Right?

My Opinion & Theory

In thinking about this further, I think it comes down to personal opinion. People certainly have success with shufflemancy via Spotify, or else they wouldn't do it. They definitely wouldn't offer their services (free or otherwise) if they weren't confident in the results it provides.

Thinking that way, I believe there's a way to off-set the algorithm's interference. With enough songs in a playlist, the random element is enhanced despite the algorithm. Not by having the same song multiple times (Spotify would surely detect this and prevent it from playing), but perhaps the same song covered by different artists. Songs with the same vibe, the same meaning, similar lyrics... AND songs from a wide variety of artists and genres, regardless of whether the shufflemancer likes the songs or not.

The person with that 600+ hour playlist for shufflemancy has it right, I think. That's the key. Variety and volume to make up for Spotify's algorithmic shuffler.

Additionally, in listening to my many, many Spotify playlists, I noticed something. If I'm listening to a playlist on shuffle and decide I want a specific song, I can choose to play it immediately. Afterwards, songs I've already heard might play. It seems as though doing this resets the shuffling algorithm in some way. Doing this in combination with a large and varied playlist might be the key to making shufflemancy in Spotify truly, fully reliable.

My Next Steps

Obviously, scholarly research only goes so far in situations like this. In order to properly gauge the accuracy of shufflemancy, I'll have to do it myself.

First, I'll need a playlist. I have a handful of playlists that sit in the hundred-hour range, but they're curated with friends for specific vibes. They're not really suitable for shufflemancy. So making one for myself is step one. I'll use premade playlists as a springboard for ideas, but the end result will be my own. For transparency, I'll make the playlist public and share it as part of the next edition in this series of posts.

The next step is to just... do it. Do the divinations, and do them regularly. Instead of a daily tarot card, I'll do a daily shuffle. I'll form "spreads" and put together a more in-depth methodology that fits my style as it develops.

Then, finally, maybe public ones? For reviews and feedback, obviously. It's one thing to do divination for myself -- confirmation bias and all -- but to do it for others and to be open for immediate feedback is entirely different.

Last, it's a matter of compiling my findings into a coherent document. Easier said than done, but done it must be.

Guess what I got on ebay!

I got this for ten dollars because it doesn't work (it's supposed to light up and make noise) and am now trying to repair it. Even if I can't, though, it's still pretty cool.

First problem, the on/off switch has been snapped off. It's that one on the lower left, but what looks like the switch is actually a fake, the real switch would be just below that one. The plastic is faintly discolored where it broke off. But it did break in the on position, so I don't think it's the reason this thing won't come on.

Second problem: the batteries fit too loosely in the compartment to make connections correctly. This is easily solved with tin foil.

But even with known working batteries, nothing happens. Now to take this thing apart and see what's happening with its guts.

Why does this thing have so many screws? On this tiny little box that's so cheaply made it could pass as a McDonald's toy. Some of the plastic around the screws is flaking off as I unscrew them, and leaving little microplastic bits all over the place

Then the screen pops out to reveal the lightbulb. It looks to be in good shape, despite all the other technical problems here.

Bingo! Found its guts! The lightbulb section comes out too. And the buttons, which fell off as soon as I opened the casing.

Is now a good time to mention I know very little about electronics? And also this thing is older than I am? The copyright date on the box is 1995.

All the soldered connections look intact - I was hoping for a loose wire or some other obvious problem, but alas it does not seem to be that simple. And I'm running out of image slots for this post, so I'll be back later with more photos and hopefully some advice from people who know more about electronics than I do. My mom is an electrical engineer, she'll think this is a blast.

The feeling of being watched, you throw any electronics out of your house, but the feeling only intensifies. The next time you see Vox on a commercial, it would feel like he's staring directly at you, and by that point, you'd feel like you can't get a sense of privacy anymore.

ActiRangers OCs!

@spicymancer said that they love to see fanart and OCs based on their own concepts, and recently unveiled a new set of auxiliary ActiRangers (conveniently numbered 11-15, gee I wonder why~), so my bf @affectos asked me to repost our ActiRangers OCs that he drew to show off!

Meets ActiRangers Magenta, Black, and Orange! Info and closeups under the cut, with Magenta's and Orange's provided by Affectos.

ActiRanger Magenta (#7)

Name: Shen

Pronouns: He/Him

Sport of Data (eSports)

Weapon: Power Controller

While the rest of the ActiRangers are just world-famous athletes on top of being Rangers, Shen pulls triple (technically quadruple)-duty:

During the day, he's a computer repairman at a big box electronics store, where he's overworked and constantly tired after clocking out.

After his shifts, he's a professional eSports gamer. He primarily plays in the fighting game circuit, but also dabbles in class-based shooters.

In spite of his exhaustion, when the adrenaline of gaming or battle kicks in (or he has himself an energy drink), he's all energy.

As an ActiRanger, he's similar to Ninja Storm's Green Samurai Ranger, Cameron Watanabe. With the real Professor Coach "missing" (and only being allowed so much PTO from his job), Shen helps her holographic replica monitor the rest of the team from their headquarters. His expertise in fighting games helps him recognize and pinpoint mistakes made in combat, where reaction times can improve, and how to 'read' opponent's movements.

When the going gets tough and he has to join the fray in person, his fighting style is greatly varied, occasionally doing combos directly lifted from the fighting games he specializes in.

Do not insinuate that eSports doesn't count as a 'real sport'. He will leave you flat on your back with a foot on your chest.

His weapon is a video game controller that can manifest a hard-light/energy blade and become a katar, similar to a lightsaber.

ActiRanger Black (#9)

Name: Tevita

Pronouns: He/Him

Sport of Kinesis (Boxing)

Weapon: Power Punchers

ActiRanger Black is my OC

Tevita is a famous Polynesian boxer, big and strong and bara on the same level as Blue and Tartan.

He struggles a lot with emotional regulation; he feels things very strongly, and can oscillate between moods very quickly, and then shut down from emotional burnout and feel completely numb. He doesn't enjoy being at the mercy of such capricious feelings, and uses boxing and Ranger combat as an outlet when things get too intense to vent excess frustration in a healthier way. If either of those are unavailable, though, he struggles to maintain composure in normal social interactions and environments.

Without a decent external target (like a boxing opponent or an enemy in battle), he may verbally or physically lash out at the source of his anger, at nearby property, or himself (the latter being somewhat common because of the self-loathing his emotional issues have instilled him with).

He is closest to ActiRanger Blue, whose calm and kind energy and advice help regulate his mood. The fact that Blue is the other strongest member of the group that can provide sparring (or hold him back) when needed is also invaluable. Being both as strong as, and much smarter than, him means Tevita trusts him more than anyone else.

At some point, Black had a rather intense outburst during a battle with Rival Knight. He was overwhelmed by feelings of hurt and betrayal that Gray would choose to leave the Rangers and join the Gambit Gang, which morphed into a violent rage. Black nearly killed Rival Knight before the other ActiRangers intervened and stopped him, which led to a spiral of self-loathing that led him to quit the team. Unfortunately, the Gambit Gang didn't get the memo, and things went even more south from there...

His boxing gloves are similar to the Mystic Force Fighters, and come with cords that allow them to be launched at a distance for ranged attacks, to bind opponents, and to pull him and opponents to each other (think a dual-purpose grappling hook or Roadhog's hook).

His number being 9 (the inversion of Gray's #6) and his color being Black are intentional subtle connections to Gray, suggesting things like their fraught relationship and perhaps being a replacement after Gray left.

ActiRanger Orange (#10/X)

Name: Toni Lance

Pronouns: She/Her

Sport of The Grind (Skateboarding)

Weapon: Power Board

Toni dabbles in all extreme sports, but her focus is professional skateboarding. Tony Hawk video games were basically practice for her; she is more than ready to use any sort of open environment as her personal skate park

She's a tomboy with a bold, punkish attitude. Very much sees herself as 'one of the boys'. She is more than able to chill, relax, and hang outside of a fight. Will be the first to defend new skaters from anyone attempting to gatekeep the hobby; also ready to throw down with HOA Karens. She has an appreciation for graffiti, but knows she lacks the knowledge to pull it off herself.

Her skateboard can morph and expand into a bladed arm-mounted shield.

Toni was Aff's first ActiRanger OC! He knew he wanted to make an extreme sports Ranger, and stumbled into her number being 10 making the perfect X-Games reference (much like how ActiRanger Pink was originally going to be #5 before Spicymancer went with the "four/fore" pun).

You'll notice that our OCs skip #8. That was an intentional choice as a courtesy to the artist CharlieDoughnut on Twitter, who we discovered drew their own ActiRanger 8, a figure-skater (excellent pun, 10/10 - or in this case, 8/8?)

Assuming Spicy intentionally skipped ahead with their ActiRangers International numbers to leave space for all the OCs they saw online, that is very gracious and kind of them, and I really appreciate them for it. It's a wonderful gesture of community and goodwill.

Feila said that in MaryEne, it'd be Mary -> Ene, with Mary being the one quietly crushing on Ene. It's mutual imo but in my head, Mary is the deeper piner in their relationship

As Feila said, MaryEne is technically also Snake/Bunny, since Mary is 1/4 Medusa, but it's the complete opposite of KuroEne since it's a really soft ship with hints of tragedy.

KuroEne is also much more aggressive, intense, thrilling, and dangerous, as a ship. It's filled to the brim with conflict and tension.

I love the cute pastel colours. Blue pink and white is such a dreamy colour combo. Bubblegum pastel candy flavoured~

I think it's really neat how Hika uses more coloured lines with the MaryEne comm, so it gives it a softer look compared to the KuroEne comm.

I find it interesting how Hika coloured more of the inner lines this time for the MaryEne art to give it a softer look.

Meanwhile, the KuroEne art has dark blue~ish black outlines to fit Kuroha/Saeru better.

I think Ene would be able to withstand the cold better. Since Mary is more strongly affected by the cold, she's wearing a warm winter jacket here ^^

I'm always pleasantly surprised by how fast Hika's turnaround time is. I got the sketch and colour WIPs much faster than expected.

I asked Hika for minor colour adjustments to give the art a more pink~ish hue, so Ene and Mary's colours look so good with a pink hue~ The bright blue fits Ene a lot.

Misc Rambles

Takane/Ene, Mary, and Ayano are my top fave KagePro femme charas, so I thought MaryEne/MaryTaka would be really dreamy.

I started shipping them because of their relationship dynamic and interaction potential and began making MaryEne AU ideas of them. Their design aesthetics are so dreamy together.

Mary seems like the type that'd follow Ene's lead and get dragged into her shenanigans (and bad advice)

They can go clothes shopping for cute outfits, and Mary can introduce Ene to making flower bouquets, tea parties, and journaling/scrapbooking.

Ene can introduce Mary to her video games and electronics and all the shenanigans she can do inside Mary's phone. Imagining Mary playing around with electronics and playing video games is cute too.

I think it'd be cute to imagine the energetic Ene helping the shy, reserved Mary to come out of her shell more and be more comfortable.

Mary and Takane/Ene also have a character parallel with dealing with social isolation and loneliness. I think they can find some deep resonance with each other over that.

I feel like if Mary tried to confront Ene about her real feelings/how she really feels (just in general), then Ene would try to hide it beneath a cheery, upbeat, bubbly exterior due to her avoidance tendency (especially with more honest feelings)

I sent this form.

Hika sent me the sketch, then the coloured version.

The outfit details and expressions of the sketch were perfect so I gave the OK to proceed.

When Hika sent the coloured version, she asked if I wanted any minor colour adjustments.

I wanted to balance their pinks and blues more (pastel pink, pastel blue, and white), so I asked to make Ene's colours a brighter blue (closer to cyan), increase the pink hue on her headphones and leggings, and to shift Mary's palette to a more pink hue.

I asked for her to add Ene's blue -> white jacket gradient, and gave this colour guide

I figured the colour suggestions would be more helpful to the artist and would give a clearer sense of what I'd like the colours to be.

Hika's always accommodating with the minor changes I ask for ^^

You can’t even tell she’s an android at first glance, not until you see her eyes change color and spot the electric sparks between her fingers.

Hadaly doesn’t like to talk about her past. Whenever the subject gets brought up, her eyes turn blue and she begins stuttering, her confidence failing as though with a press of a switch. Perhaps literally—you don’t know if she has any switches or buttons anywhere on her body. She’s not one for revealing clothing, and won’t let you inspect her personally until you start working for it.

it‘s just a little hard for me to answer because i‘ve been watching motogp for such a long time that i‘m a bit at loss at how to give you advice on how to get into it from a fresh start basically, so i apologize if it‘s not helpful! 😅

i don‘t think getting into motogp is that much more complicated than f1, tho? but idk hahah maybe it is

my best guess or advice would be to kind of tune in to the race weekends and get a bit of a feel for it. unfortunately i don‘t even know where you can stream it live (and costless, i totally understand not wanting to pay for any membership especially in the beginning!) because i‘m blessed with servustv and their great comms too, but it‘s the german tv, so.

i personally enjoy the racing in motogp much more than f1, although dorna/ motogp try hard to push motogp to be „f1 on two wheels“ (we all hate dorna in the motogp household as do we hate the fim stewards but,,different topic) and in these past years, the bikes have vastly changed with loads of added aerodynamics and electronics etc that are frankly too much and take away from the racing itself because there‘s so many devices to activate at all time, there‘s the entire aspect of the (fuckass) tire pressure regulations that has resulted in drama one too many times etc etc etc. anyway, in 2027 a lot of the devices and shit will be banned with new regulations and we hope for more pure racing action again!

there is also a lot less media training from the riders (which i for one enjoy) and also most of the riders speak in their native languages (italian or spanish…) and their english isn’t the most fluent, so most interviews and even in the documentary series are spoken in their native language (with english subtitles/translations added)

so long story short, motogp is considered the pinnacle of motorcycle racing as much as f1 is the pinnacle of motorsport/ car racing, but they‘re both still different.
